The Juices are Flowing

It seems that Romo is getting excited about the regular season just as we are. He said “The juices are flowing just because you know the first game is coming.” Though I don’t really know what juices he is talking about, I just assumed it was in reference to him and Jessica. Who knows.
On another note, it seems as if the regular season couldn’t get here fast enough. Many teams have suffered injuries to some key players. This including the Cowboys. Kyle Kosier could miss up to six weeks because of sprained right foot and also a hairline fracture. This is a pretty significant loss for the O-line. It’s pretty big shoes to fill when your replacing someone who hasn’t missed a game since 2002, especially a veteran O-lineman. The man who will be filling in for Big K, Joe Berger, who has never started a game in his entire career. SHIT! Hopefully the other veterans can pull him in fast and get him rolling with very few hang ups. Please Dear Lord.
Isiah Stanback also is out with a dislocated shoulder, the same injury he had surgery for last year. This is a big kick to the nuts especially because Miles Austin is also out. I was hoping all off season we would bring in just one more wide out to help balance the passing game. Now were going to need some rookies to step up big time. Thats you Danny!!! Block the old “10 and In ” route out of your head! It is time to learn some big kid routes! Danny has a lot to prove, but being a Red Raider fan I have seen a lot of him play and he has the skill to be great.

Pre-Season Offensive Recap vs. Houston

The game against the Texans was a little painful to watch at some moments, but all in all it was a pretty decent offensive ball game for the Boys. As always, there were areas that need improvement. The Barbarian looked like he ate a pre-game dinner of raw meat with a side of nails. He punished the Texans defense in his short but sweet appearance. Actually he bent them over and did them dirty. Marion rushed 13 times for 75 yards and a TD. I am really looking forward to seeing him work this year.

Ol’ Tony had himself a pretty solid game against the in-state rivals (there Texans fans I said it just to make you happy). Romo completed 15 of 19 passes for 166 yards and led the offense on two touchdown drives, including a six-yard TD pass to Patty Crayton in the first quarter. The only real concern I had with the performance of the Offense didn’t come from a player but from our boy wonder offensive coordinator. WHY WHY WHY would you pound the ball down the Texans throats with your running game and then try and throw the ball on 2nd and goal? With the end result of Romo throwing an interception that led to a Texans TD drive . I may not be a multi-million dollar coordinator but seriously one more hand off to Marion and your in there for 6! That’s how I see it. One play that sticks out most in my head from this game was Romo over throwing TO in what would have been a deep Touchdown pass, the reason it stuck out so much was because in last weeks episode of “Hard Knocks”, TO said that him being over thrown doesn’t happen that often. Well it happened and it sucked.

The Big Nasty’s (O-Line) had a great showing on the field Friday night. Tony actually had a pocket to sit in which in turn allowed him to complete most of his passes. I felt like I was watching a 7-on-7 tournament minus the 4 second time limit. Also, Marion’s performance has to be linked to the enormous holes manufactured by the big guys. You could have driven a Volkswagen through some of those holes. This could be a great season if these guys stay healthy and continue to dominate the opposing D-line like they did against the Texans. (ya Mario Williams sucks by the way)
The only good thing about pre-season is getting to watch the Rookie’s. Felix Jones had a well….SHITTY performance. 5 carries for 10 yards and a lost fumble. I wouldn’t be worried about this though, yes he is a rookie, but I believe he has transitioned pretty smoothly into the game speed and intensity of the NFL. We have one more pre-season game to see what he can do and I feel like he has a lot more to show than the few plays we have seen. I am very impressed with how quick his feet are and how well he cuts and reacts. It is going to add another weapon to the already potent offense with the option to throw to him out of the backfield.
The 2′s and 3′s looked alright against the Texans. Watching Brad Johnson is like watching ice melt, but he did have him self a pretty decent game against a pathetic Texans defense. By the way Jacques Reeves looked shittier than he did in Dallas. I am just ready for the Vikings game, because that means we are that much closer to REAL games!

(Oops how did she get there?)

Pre Season Defensive Game 3 Recap

All I can say for this game is Brian Stewart has got some work to do! This is now the second game in a row where this defense looked, well let’s say shaky at times. This unit needs to step it up come game one of the “Real Season” for this team to carry out the goals they wish to achieve. I am sure have all heard the saying “defense wins championships” well this year will be no different. As great an offensive team as this is,they will not win nor play for a championship, if this unit cannot step it up.
Well I, like the Cowboys am still in preseason mode, so bare with me on this first recap post! First of all, I thought the D-line played very well throughout last night. The Texans O-Line was not much challenge to the first teamers, as Tank, Canty, and Spears busted through seemingly at will. Marcus Spears had probably his best game of the year, although the numbers may not show it, as he logged only one tackle and one assist. Spears spent a lot of the night in the backfield. Tank Johnson looks to be a man on a mission! Nearly every play he beat his man, and caused the Texans plays to be redirected. The only negative thing I noted about Tank, and Spears for that matter, is their tackling. Its one thing to be in the backfield, but if you cannot make the tackle then what good does it do you? We did not here Chris Canty’s name much last night, but there were no running lanes on his side of the line. So in my opinion that is a BIG positive. Ratlif, Bowen, and Hatcher all looked good, although it is difficult to judge when the field is full of 2nd and 3rd string players.
Here is where it gets shaky for the Boys. Outside of Demarcus Ware, this linebacker corp. last night was exceptionally average! They had plenty of intensity, but, over pursuit is what kept the Texans in the game. The screen pass and the draw play were Matt Schaub and Co. best friend! These areas must be corrected! And quickly! Bradie James and Zach Thomas played an entire half of football and combined for two tackles and one assist (the two tackles recorded by Zach Thomas). So here is the “Leader of the Defense” and inside linebacker, recording ONE ASSIST!! If this does not change, I will be ripping Bradie instead of Roy Willy, well maybe not instead of but in addition too. These types of numbers are completely unacceptable! Now let’s move on before my blood pressure gets entirely out of hand. This next backer had by the numbers a good game, but the numbers are very deceiving in Bobby Carpenter’s case. This guy is and has been a complete bust, another wasted first round pick. Thank you oh “Draft God” Bill Parcells, do not get me wrong Bill made some great picks, this however was not even close. If I have to suffer through watching much more of this guy I am going to puke! He seems to always be around the ball, unfortunately it’s just after someone else has made the tackle, and the ball carrier made an extra couple of yards. He needs to go!

The secondary was pretty solid last night. Once the blitz packages come this unit is going to have many, many chances for interceptions. They are deep too, not much drop off, if any from 1st to 2nd string. Before he hurt his shoulder, I thought Scandrick was having a nice game for a 5th Round rookie corner. Anthony Henry can still play! Adam Jones had another solid game, he continues to get better every week. Oh by the way it is official, the Cowboys now have a legitimate “Take it to the house” punt returner! Jones was about 3 inches away from taking one to the house last night. Roy Willy has not changed much, same song and dance for him, even with the number change! If not for Matt Schaub forgetting how to throw, Owen Daniels burns him. I will say he was at least in the same zip code as his man, last year all we would have seen was his back. Campo I love you man but can you please give Roy some one on one tackling instruction. For a guy known for hitting, he has completely forgotten how! The one good thing I can report on Roy’s performance, limited play! Thank You, Brian Stewart.
All in all for the 3rd preseason game it was a decent showing for this year’s defense. If they can build on this performance they should be ok. We will all have a better idea of what they got after the Cleveland game. The defense should get all it can handle in the “Dawg Pound”. This teams hopes and dreams rest solely on the shoulders of this defense. It is time to put or shut up! No more excuses its time for them all to prove they belong or hit the road. I for one believe they can and will prove to us all that they are a great defense, not just good!

A few Cowboys facts you might not know!

Throughout the season I will be posting some facts and Trivia Questions. Hopefully each week! Feel free to leave comments and answers to the trivia questions. Hopefully some of these are ones you dont know!
Terrence Newman was not beaten for a Touchdown catch at anytime during the 2005 season!
Terry Glenn caught 62 passes in 2005, 49 were for first downs.
Miles Austin finished his college career at Monmouth in 2005, he left as the school’s All-Time leader with 150 catches, 2,867 yards receiving, and 33 TD’s.
Miles Austin once threw a Javelin 214 feet, 8 inches in high school, the 2nd longest throw in Bergen County history!(double pass play in the future???)
Sam Hurd set a Northern Illinois school record with 266 receiving yards against Central Michigan in 2005.
Marion Barber scored all 5 of his TD’s as a rookie in a 3 game stretch.
Jason Witten set a Cowboy’s record in 2004 with 87 receptions for 980 yards!

Just a few to get going! More to come next week! GO BOYS!!!!!!!!

New Confidence brewing in Dallas

The 08-09 Cowboys Defense, with the exception of two changes, looks very similar to last year’s defense. The most highly publicized change has been the upgrade in the Dallas secondary. With the additions of number 1 draft pick Mike Jenkins, and the off season trade for Adam Jones, joining the team, these two players should change the defense entirely. Along with undeniable skill, they bring with them a fierce bloodthirsty mentality, which this team has been missing for a long time. Neither of these guys has shown any reluctance to smack their opponent upside the head!
Mike Jenkins is an incredible man defender, he is a guy that you can put on an island and let him take his man out of the picture. So far from what I have seen he has two areas of improvement that need to be addressed. The first area of concern his occasional tendency to bite very hard on a double move. Once he gets more attuned with the NFL game a lot of this will take care of itself. The second area of concern with Jenkins is his zone coverage play. Let us not forget, he is a rookie and I am sure he has never seen a playbook quite this big, nor with this many reads to make. Our resident offensive coordinator is a Princeton grad, if a typical NFL playbook was 200 pages, I’m guessing his is 700. It is very evident to me that he has found himself a mentor, and he is responding extremely well to him. That mentor is none other than Terrence Newman! This floored me at first, not that Jenkins had a mentor, but more that it was Newman. Newman has always been very reserved and not much into teaching another corner how to play his position, especially one that will, one day, be trying to take his job! What has made Newman more willing to counsel the young up and comer?
Adam Jones, as we all know, has not been reinstated. Yet! I say yet because I believe it is merely formality. He, like Jenkins, is strong man defender with an attitude. I have been pleasantly surprised by this guy’s work ethic. For a man that has been in all sorts of trouble, doing very immature things, he is coming across now as a throwback player. The league used to be full of players that were, shall we say, “lunch pale” kind of guys. Adam Jones clearly falls into that category. I know, I know, we all see the flashy “Pac-man bout to make it rain up in here” things. These things may be who he is off the field, but on the field he is nothing like that. Now has he suddenly appears to have become a better person off the field. Whether that is true or not, well that I do not know. But from what I have seen so far, if I had to give an answer, I would say probably he has cleaned up his off field act. People do come equipped with the ability to change who they are, and it is not up to you or I to judge anyone. He will have his day when he is judged. So now the next question becomes: Why is he apparently changing now and not 6 months ago?
In my opinion, the second substantial change to this defense is the principle difference! It is an addition that has not received a great deal of press and I certainly did not realize the impact that it would have. Dave Campo! Yes, Dave Campo! He may very well turn out to be the key acquisition for a run at the Super Bowl. Everyone, including myself, dismissed this guy. My opinion of him has always been: “How can he be the right man to turn a sorry secondary into a “Super Bowl Champion potential” secondary, when he failed miserably as the team’s head coach”? Something I even neglect to remember sometimes is that when Campo took over as the head man, he acquired a very shitty football team. The players on that team loved Campo and they played hard for him. They simply were not NFL playoff caliber players! In the end, it cost him his job, but was it his fault entirely? My answer is NO! And I believe that if people within the organization were asked they would say the same thing. This, however, is nothing new for the NFL. Coaches get fired all the time when they do not win, no matter who is to blame! This guy has taken a mentally weak secondary and given them something that they have not seen at Valley Ranch in a long time; confidence! Even when they were winning Super Bowls, and were absolutely dominating teams, the secondary as a unit never had the confidence that they are showing now! That’s right I said never. And that includes when Prime Time was here. Prime Time was the only one who had confidence or game for that matter. This team is different, and I for one believe it is instigated by one Dave Campo. So to find the answers to our questions about Newman and Jones, You need look no further than their leader!

One Night at “Baby Dolls”

One of my friends, who shall remain nameless at this time, was having a beer over at “Baby Dolls” when he heard some commotion coming from the VIP room, and when he peeked around the corner to see who it was he was a little quirked at what he saw….
(sounds of a Lil’ Wayne song filling the room)

Pacman Jones:
(drinking Hennessy out of a golden goblet that says “PACMAN”)
“Ya ya the PAC is back babay!”

Felix Jones:
“Say Pacman you think its ok to be drinkin seein’ how this is preseason and all, and you need to be on your best behavior?”
Pacman:
“Shit son the Pac dont gotta worry about shit, know that Pacman under Jerry Jones’ wing he can do whateva he please… ya heard?”

Danny Amendola:
(stumbling drunk after drinking a 24 pack of keystone Light)
“Man am I glad to be out Lubbock, that place is a shit-hole, only thing to do there is drink and go to titty bars!”(belches the ABC’s)
Pacman: (motor-boating some underage stripper named Pepper)
“Hey Felix…can I call you the cat?”
Felix:

Amendola:

Pacman:

Felix:
I will drive Pacman…Mr. Jones said he would show me where the Wild Goose goes if I let you out of my sight.

Upcoming here at A Cowboy Nation

Well football time is here again! So Lee and I have decided that it is time for us to either continue with this blog or quit! After debating for just a little bit we have come to the conclusion that we are going to put forth the effort to make this blog worth reading.
We have devised a plan to help us keep each other motivated and accountable. For the upcoming season Lee is going to tackle the goings on of the offensive side of the team, hopefully providing us with in depth breakdowns of each and every game. As for me I will be taking on the defensive side of team. I am going to try my very best to not cuss Roy Willy each and every week! I said try, that’s all I can do is try!
On a joint task every week Lee and I will be writing two posts. One post will be our “Slug of the week”, this award will be given to the person who deserves to be taken out behind the wood shed! So in all fairness we will also be giving our “MVP of the week” this award will be given to the person who should be taken on an all expensed paid trip to the Iguana club!
I will also be posting through out the year about our rookie class. I am going to either do a rookie of the week or month post. Not sure yet how often I will do that, but I will keep you posted. Along these same lines Lee is working on some; well let’s say very humorous posts that I think everyone will get a good laugh out of.
We are going to try to get a few posts in before the start of the regular season. Primarily though we will be working out the kinks for our regular season posts. This year is setting up to be a great football season, and hopefully we can keep you all interested. If anyone has anything that you would like to see us post about please let us know and we will see what we can do. LET’S GO COWBOYS!!!!!
