Dallas Cowboys Nation

Seeing the Brighter Side …

I know it’s a little too soon to be redesigning the site already, but I wanted to offer you guys a choice of light or dark. The choice is coming soon, and for now I’ll be leaving it light as a neutral approach. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new look, if you have any.

Getting ready for the big game tomorrow and just got word from my uncle … a long time, die hard Steelers fan. Maybe I just haven’t gotten over his crap over the years about the Steelers and Cowboys, but I still think the Cards are going to bring it home tomorrow.

Let’s Go Cardinals! You sucked through the season and had the easiest division around, but you’re doing what you have to now, so keep it up.

Communities are what keep this country going … Wouldn’t you agree?

Whether it’s a community trying to keep local culture and commerce alive with family owned business and small-town flare for familiarity, or it’s a community of football fans all pulling for the returned success of the Dallas Cowboys. Community is behind it all.

That’s the purpose of CowboysNation.net, community. Cowboys fans are as diverse as they are many, and yet we all come together over a singular topic nearly every day … that topic? It’s a simple question, really, albeit complicated to answer. How can the Cowboys regain the glory of old and hoist a sixth Lombardi Trophy into the charged atmosphere that only a Super Bowl victory can ignite?

Okay, so maybe that was a little dramatic, but here’s something that’s not at all dramatic. It seems that my friends over at www.FireTheCowboysGM.com aren’t the only ones hoping for a change in regime at Valley Ranch.

An Open Appeal to the Owner of the Dallas Cowboys

An Open Appeal to the Owner of the Dallas Cowboys

Covering both past and current events, FireGMJerry.com nicely constructs a chronicle of Jerry Jones’ failures as the GM of the Dallas Cowboys. Searching for a way only to bring another Championship title to Dallas, you can see quite clearly that a change at the top is needed.

Well … being the dutiful fan that I am, I’ve made a new friend in Ryan, the author of www.FireGMJerry.com. Here’s a piece of his message to Jerry Jones …

Unfortunately, you are not an elite general manager. You make questionable calls to bring in talented, yet troublesome players who destroy team chemistry. You listen to the wrong people and ignore sound advice. Be honest, Mr. Jones – if someone else had the same record as GM over the past 10 years as you, would he still be your employee? Of course not, because you demand the excellence that is needed to be a dominating force in the NFL.- FireGMJerry.com, “Dear Mr. Jones”

Reading through his features … Injuries & Usurpations and original posts from the author … he makes a good case for his argument, and I encourage you all to check out his site.

The biggest trials of this quest are that of numbers, and through our voices we can spread the word, and we can make a difference.

Should Jerry Jones, the GM, be fired?

I just saw something I found interesting and wanted to share it with you guys. You know that I support this website … www.FireTheCowboysGM.com … well they’ve had a poll on their front page for a week or so now, and the results are worth a mention here.

The question being asked is this, “Based on the results from the last 12 years (no playoff wins), how many times would Jerry Jones have fired the General Manager, if it wasn’t him?”

54 people out of the 1,154 that have voted think the answer is none, 95% of the votes are for at least an answer of once. That includes 822 votes agreeing that he would have done it three times or more.

It’s funny because so many people like to say that he isn’t the problem when people like Shannon Sharpe starting saying he is the problem. This little website with very little exposure has already gotten 1,100 people to agree that he has messed up pretty badly. I wonder how the results would change if more people went and checked out the site.

More to come …

Wade Phillips may be the solution

I’ve got a theory; tell me what you think of it.

Wade Phillips is the head coach, he responsible for overseeing his other coaches and getting everything together for the game plan he develops.

In 2008, the defense sucked until Wade started taking a bigger role on D, even though Stewart still looked like the guy in charge.

Starting with that Tampa game, when Phillips took over the D, the offense started playing worse, at first because Romo was out, but even when he came back, the O wasn’t doing half of what the D was doing.

It seemed for the last half of the season that whenever the D played well, the O played poorly, and when the O played well, the D played poorly. Going up against the best defensive teams in the league, the Cowboys still stayed in the game until the end.

Before the Tampa game, when Romo was playing the offense did great, see week 2 against Philly for an example. You can even look at the Baltimore game for an example. Both teams were pretty even throughout the game, caught in a strong defensive game. But when the Cowboys started driving to score late for the win, the D completely collapsed. Makes you wonder.

Greg “The Whiner King” Ellis at it again

Well that didn’t take long. Greg Ellis has already started his campaign for biggest pain in the ass, and it’s not even February yet.

Now maybe we can’t really disagree with him too much since he is saying that he wasn’t used right on the field, but yeah, we can disagree. Ellis is old and he fades fast when he’s used as a 3 down player. He is a good pass rusher, but his coverage skills are below average for a linebacker.

He does have a point when it comes to the coaches not utilizing the players correctly in games, but he was hardly one to focus on. Yes, Wade and Stewart should have kept him out of coverage more than they did, but he wasn’t a liability in coverage, so it’s not that big of a deal.

But we all know about the lack of proper management when it came to players like Felix Jones, Terrell Owens, and others. So I say it’s a good thing that Ellis said some of what he did, but it’s about time that he accepts his position as a linebacker.

This is the fourth year in a row that he has complained about something, and it all started when he was switched from defensive end, his natural position throughout his career, to outside linebacker by Bill Parcels. Maybe he thinks if he becomes a big enough whiner that they’ll move him back to DE.

In reality, he’ll just be released or traded once the team feels they can rely on Spencer to fill his shoes full time. Something tells me that we might be seeing that situation this off-season.

“It Was Not The Coaches Fault” Thanks For The Insight!

Bradie James has decided this week to step out and defend his former defensive coordinator. While I think its commendable that he do that, I am to say the least, aggravated that he waited until the season was over to step up!
For an entire season Brian Stewart did everything he knew how to get this unit to play up to its potential. As we all know nothing he knew helped! Not until Wade Phillips took over play calling duties did this unit begin to come around. The lack of preparation and willingness to accept their role by the players, eventually led to his demise.

A Mysterious Consultant

So what does it mean to have a consultant on a team that is otherwise fully staffed? I know we still need a DC, but Reeves would never be a candidate for that spot anyway.

I suppose one possibility is that Reeves will be a general consultant at the top, meaning along side Wade Phillips. I’ve stated my opinion before that if Wade were to be both Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator that he wouldn’t be able to do his job fully on either front. Maybe the organization agrees with that point and will let Phillips run the defense and be HC while Reeves picks up at the HC spot where Wade leaves off.

A consultant can technically have as much or as little responsibility as needed, and as pointed out on DC.com, Reeves interviewed last week for an OC position in San Francisco. It does indicate that after almost 5 years out of the league that he is ready for a hands on job.

He could help Jason Garrett. Garrett is a decent coach, the team was 13-3 last year and you don’t get that kind of record without some notable ability. Even if Parcels did leave enough in place, even if Sparano was a big part of that record, Garrett still has an upside worth waiting for in some cases.

Another stint for Reeves with America’s Team?

Saw something interesting this morning. According to the DC.com Writer’s Block Blog, Former head coach Dan Reeves reportedly told the San Francisco 49ers that he will decline a position on the team in favor of joining the Dallas Cowboys.

No official word as of yet on exactly what that means or even if it’s true, Josh Ellis says it is supposed to be some sort of consulting role that is in the works.

Reeves has coached several teams, but the most notable of which was the Atlanta Falcons. Wade Phillips served as his defensive coordinator in Atlanta and when Reeves was fired during the 2003 season, Phillips was his successor.

Atlanta made a Super Bowl appearance in XXXIII under then head coach Dan Reeves, but lost to the Denver Broncos, another team that Reeves has led in his career. It also would team him together with his son-in-law Joe DeCamillis, who the Cowboys recently hired to run their special teams unit.

He’s always been known as a hard ass, a tough coach that demands a lot from his players, and his character could be a great addition to this team after a year plagued by reports of indiscipline in the Cowboys locker room, practices, and games.

What do you think about bringing in Dan Reeves, and what role do you think he would be best for on this team? Remember that he was interviewing for the OC spot in San Fran, and has a strong offensive background in the league.

Does Garrett stand in the way of him being the OC in Dallas? Should he?
