Cowboys Defeat Chargers but work still to be done.

Posted by Bryan Martin On August - 22 - 2010 View Comments

Last night the Dallas Cowboys allotted more time for the first teams to show their stuff.  It turns out it they needed a lot more than just the first 2 quarters.   We’ll take some time to highlight the Good, Bad, and Ugly of last nights game.

The Good:

- Sean Lee displayed good speed and recognition in his play last night.    That’s a good sign for someone who was injury prone during his collegiate career.  Lee is very similar to Brooking and if he continues to progress the way he is, it’ll be a very good career he’ll have in Dallas.

- Martellus Bennett finally showed some fight in him.  After a disappointing season and dramatic offseason, Martellus Bennett came into the game amassing 40 yards off of two catches.  Bennett has been under a lot of scrutiny for his lack of motivation but if this is a sign of things to come it’ll be good news for a struggling offense.

- Miles Austin was able to snag a perfectly thrown back shoulder fade by Tony Romo.   You can expect this to happen frequently this season.  This too was a sign that Miles wasn’t a one hit wonder.

The Bad:

- For a team who is looking to hoist a dominant running game, Felix, Tashard, and Marion have looked less than stellar.  Behind a quality offensive line you’d expect to see something out of this trio of running backs that are projected to be game changers.

- Kevin Ogletree.  For a guy who is being given a lot of opportunities to produce, he isn’t.  The Cowboys really think a lot of this guy and throughout practice and game situations he’s been mediocre at best.

The Ugly

The Offense– particularly the play of Tony Romo.  Now I can say this, I think Tony Romo will be a top 5 quarterback this season.  However, he needs to start producing.  I know his play has been limited but he looked rusty and that’s not something that is encouraging entering a season with great expectations.

Notes:

Injuries to Sensabaugh and Brooking seem to be a non issue but will be held out for precautionary reasons.

Akwasi looked good for his pro debut.  Quick with good burst needs to work on fluidity in movement and decisions.

Cletis Gordon is fighting hard for a spot on this roster and I think he just might make one.  He has been incredibly consistent when he has to make plays on the ball.

2010-2011 Dallas Cowboys Season Predictions

Posted by Bryan Martin On August - 15 - 2010 View Comments

The Dallas Cowboys will start this season striving for something that has never been done: attempting to win a home super bowl.  Playing in a Super Bowl at home is, in itself, an incredibly unheard of feat.  That being said a dynamic offense synced with a superb defense will be the identity of this Dallas Cowboys team against some difficult foes.  So we’ll take a look at the schedule and predict how this season will unfold.

Week 1 – @ Washington

The Cowboys open the season in a rivalry game that offers a lot of new faces in new places.  Mike Shanahan will lead Donovan McNabb and the Washington Redskins onto the field.  In a battle that will seem lopsided the Cowboys Offense will overpower the Skins D.

Outcome: Dallas 31 – Wash 17

Week 2 – CHICAGO

The Cowboys open in Dallas against a rebuilding Chicago team.  Jay Cutler will be under a fire storm and Miles Austin and Dez Bryant are going to torch Chicago’s passing D in a big way.  Expect Ware to get multiple sacks against Cutler who looks like a statue in the pocket sometimes.

Outcome: Dallas 24 – Chicago 10

Week 3 – @ Houston

Houston is a sleeper for sure this year.  They offer a tough matchup in the passing game.  Owen Daniel and Andre Johnson provide Schaub legitimate targets that can get things rolling.  The Houston D is also potent enough to considered a threat.  However, the lack of a running game makes the passing attack an easier gameplan and the Boys win a close one.

Outcome: Dallas 27 – Houston 24

Week 5 – TENNESSEE

Another week with a lopsided offense.  Dallas should be able to focus on CJ2K and Vince Young and dominate the young team.  The Titans D allowed the 20th highest points per game last year and I expect the high scoring Cowboys to exploit that.

Outcome: Dallas 35 – Tennessee 16

Week 6 – @ Minnesota

There are two scenarios here, none of them good.  Farve returns and dices the Cowboys Secondary.  Favre doesn’t return and Jared Allen dices up the Cowboys new left tackle.  Take your pick.  There is upside, the game is a lot closer if Favre stays home.

Outcome Dallas: 17 – Minnesota 28

Week 7 – N.Y. GIANTS

Cowboys come off a loss in Minnesota by facing bitter rival New York.  The Cowboys are lucky in this game as New York can’t get it’s running game established through a tough showing through the Dallas D.  The Cowboys are able to use there running game to establish control and win a big statement game.

Outcome: Dallas 27 – New York 21

Week 8 – JACKSONVILLE

An easier game in the schedule, the Cowboys handle the inconsistent David Garrard with ease.  This is a field day for a very talented Cowboys team and it’s over before the third quarter sees it’s halfway mark.

Outcome: Dallas 38 – 13

Week 9 – @ Green Bay

Dallas meets a equally talented team in the frozen tundra.  Aaron Rodgers and Greg Jennings offer the Cowboys a chance to see what it feels like to be diced by a tremendous passing offense and Ryan Grant offers a good “Don’t forget me” aspect of the game.  This one is a battle however, once that Mason Crosby decides on a frigid day.

Outcome: Dallas 24 – Green Bay 27

Week 10 – @ N.Y. Giants

Cowboys wont get caught again this time and face the first losing streak of the season with 2.  Its hard to sweep the Giants and this time they’re a little more prepared.

Outcome: Dallas 21 – New York 28

Week 11 – DETROIT

The hard fighting Detroit Lions come to Dallas to get massacred.  Detroit never gives up and Matt Stafford will surely be a force at quarterback in a few years but this time the Boys run them to hard on both sides of the ball and end this one quickly.

Outcome: Dallas 31 – Detroit 17

Week 12 – NEW ORLEANS

Last year the Cowboys walked into the superdome against an undefeated team.  They won and the Saints are looking to exact revenge.  Unfortunately, the Cowboys Defense puts in one of the strongest showings of the season and force 3 turnovers.

Outcome: Dallas 32 – New Orleans 27

Week 13 – @ Indianapolis

How many people run into Indianapolis and defeat Peyton Manning and the Colts?  Answer: Not many.  The Cowboys don’t’ get to do what other teams have before and lose to the offensive genius known as Peyton.

Outcome: Dallas 24 – IND 28

Week 14 – PHILADELPHIA

Last year is fresh on the Eagles mind and Kevin Kolb is starting to come into his own.  However, Jenkins seems to have DeSean Jackson’s number and the Cowboys shut down a team that lives by the pass.  On the other end of the ball Dez Bryant has taken over the # 2 spot by now and will dice up the weak Philly Secondary.

Outcome: Dallas 27 – Philly 17

Week 15 – WASHINGTON

The Cowboys sweep the Redskins who at this time are relying way too heavily on McNabb and are deeply in need of a quality running game.

Outcome: Dallas 21 – Wash 14

Week 16 – @ Arizona

The Cardinals are a mess at QB at this point the cards are thinking about next year and have inserted Anderson in as Leinharts replacement.  Things aren’t looking good for the once impressive Arizona Cardinals as they face the upper class of the NFC.  Marion Barber and Felix Jones take a lot of pressure off of Romo and the group as they coast to a low scoring, clock controlled game.

Outcome: Dallas 24 – Ari 9

Week 17 – @ Philadelphia

The Cowboys clinched the playoffs last week against Arizona and take this game to rest some starters.  Since the NFC East is a few games back of the Boys, the Cowboys take this time to see what their depth looks like and plan ahead for a playoff game as the number 3 seed.

Outcome: Dallas 14 – Philly 24

Overall Season Outcome:

DAL 11-5; 3rd Seed NFC

OTA’s are well underway and you start to wonder what will be made of the big headlines.  From Miles Austin to Gerald Sensabaugh to Dez Bryant, there are still many questions.  Yet, somehow, we still feel confident enough to label this Cowboys team as “Super.”  Is that right? Can we deem them so successful when there is so much haze?

Well fear no more… I am here to help you understand some of the questions you’ve asked and some that you want to ask.

Ed Folker asked “Will The Cowboys Trade for or Make a Deal for a Seasoned Safety?? Pref. The guy from The Rams!”

Ed, that’s a good question and a popular one at that.  It is very unlikely that the Cowboys even consider this option.  Alan Ball and Mike Hamlin have shown good potential and have grown considerable as professionals.  On the other side, if Sensabaugh decides to do something shocking, I still like what Akwasi brings.  Though they are all raw, it’s better then spending a large sum of money on a new contract for someone like Otagwe.

Now, my opinion isn’t law or concrete.  There are some smaller name safeties out there that the cowboys could look at.  I also like Barry Church the undrafted rookie.

I think Jerry is looking in house though.

Brent Cochran — “If Wade doesn’t make the playoffs will JJ give him the AX!?”

I personally don’t think so.  Mostly because next year is so uncertain, the coaching search would be very difficult.  However, many refer to Jason Garrett as the coach of the future, and he very well could be.  If Wade has a horrible season and by horrible I mean less then .500, than Jerry will consider the “Axe” but like I said this is the class of the NFC East, if they go worse than .500 then there are bigger problems.

Chris Synnott — “Will the cowboys put dez in the slot because I think it would create tough match up problems for defenses? “

Although I see where you’re seeing the mismatches, I believe Dez Bryant offers something even better.  Dez Bryant is surely a number 2 potential receiver TODAY and a number 1 in a few years.  This means that you can move Roy to 1 Dez to 2 and put Miles in the slot at times to create some very big mismatches.

Don’t confuse what I’m saying though; Miles is the number 1 receiver.  I am merely talking about shotgun and singleback sets where a slot receiver is used.  This would make things pretty interesting.

DCN—What will the Cowboys Do about Sensabaugh and Austin?

Expect Sensabaugh to get a deal first, I don’t say that because he deserves on but because he is the most willing to test free agency.  However, because of Sensabaughs eagerness he wont get the deal he probably deserves.  His pay will define mediocrity but will be more then the 1 year deal he doesn’t want.

On the other hand, Austin, if he can remain humble and patient, will receive a 5-7 year deal from the well paying Dallas Cowboys.  All he needs to do is have 2 solid games.  Im not talking 150 yard games, I’m talking maybe 70-100 yards with 1+ Td’s.  Not very hard, by week 7 Austin is locked up.

DCN—When will Dez supplant Roy?

Don’t get too excited, Roy will be number 2 at the beginning of the season.  If he can prove that he’s ready to finally play, then he’ll stay there.  Now Jerry didn’t move up for no reason so expect Dez to get his share, if he performs well, you’ll see Roy see decreased snaps.

DCN—How will the Cowboys do this year?

In the next week ill do a season prediction (last year I was only off 1 game, so I pretty much rock) but believe me when I say the Cowboys will win the NFC East this year.

DCN—Can we expect a Super Bowl?

I don’t think we can expect anything.  Expect them to contend, ill let you know when I feel that they are “Super” quality though.

Voice of the Nation

Posted by Bryan Martin On May - 4 - 2010 View Comments

Q: Why Don’t we just trade Roy Williams for a draft pick or 2?

Unfortunately there is just nothing we can do at this point.  We owe Roy a substantial amount of money this year and no team is looking at him as a “must have guy”.   What does this mean?  It means that the value of Roy Williams is minimal right now, plus he’s the best option at least for the rest of this year.   Any future moves will depend on the development of Ogletree and Bryant.

Q: What is the update on Crayton and or Hurd being traded?

The latest reports say this:  Hurd has been participating in work outs and his dynamic special teams ability and potential as a receiver makes him attractive to keep around.

On the other side, Crayton wants to stay a Cowboy but he hasn’t shown up for any workouts and he is the most likely to be traded or released.  I expect one or the other to happen before training camp.

Q: What other players looked hot/cold during mini-camp?

According to reports Scott Sicko, Barry Church, and Danny McCray all looked great.  Also Sean Lee impresses the coaching staff.

Q: Are there any potential starters or possibly another star amongst undrafted rookies?

I just don’t see it this year.  Sicko is impressive but we have way to much depth there.  The best shot would be among the young safeties but even that is a long shot.

Q: Are we grooming a new Quarterback yet?

Stephen McGee right now is our “Future  I expect that to change though over time.  He has a good arm but I’m just not sure he’s a viable option as a starting quarterback in this league.  However, as of this minute he is our “Quarterback of the Future”

Dallas Cowboys Mini Camp Recap

Posted by Bryan Martin On May - 2 - 2010 View Comments

Rookie minicamp has concluded and we’ve been able to come with some pretty good analysis from what we have here in our rookies.

We’re Safe

A lot of us fans have expressed concern over the safety position this offseason with the departure of Ken Hamlin.  However, calm your nerves.  Akwasi has been incredibly involved in learning all the mental aspects of the games and the feeling is that he is going to be in a position to get good playing time.

On top of that, both undrafted safeties impressed this week.   Danny McCray and Barry Church were consistently making plays during drills this week which seemed to earn them the trust of the coaching staff.  Does that mean they will both make the time? Time will tell, my guy says only one of those two will stick but we’re extremely thin in the position.  Both seem to be quality players who, over time, might be able to develop.

My money is on Akwasi though, I think he will turn into a starter in the league in about a year.  Also, lets not forget about Alan Ball he’s a viable option and could play consistently enough to get us through.

Inside Track

When the Cowboys drafted Sean Lee, fans were confused and angry, experts were applauding.  It seems like there is a reason experts are well… experts.  Sean Lee has, at this point, looked very good; he understands the terminology and successfully reads plays. The consensus is that Lee will be the first Cowboy rookie to see substantial playing time.

My Favorite Character

The Cowboys drafted Wide Receiver Dez Bryant and media critics were concerned.  Not because of his talent but because of his character that was considered to be pretty horrid.  Well Dez Bryant is a character, just not a bad one.  His interviews were polite and articulate.  He sounded genuinely grateful and excited to be a part of this Cowboys team.

Despite some physical issues, he contorted his body to make some impressive plays and pushed himself past the point of exhaustion to prove that he can work hard.  I am impressed at what he’s done and look forward to what he will evolve into; which will be a dynamic Pro-Bowl receiver.

Sick Indecision

Scott Sicko of New Hampshire originally decided to pursue football after not being drafted, only to reverse that decision after thoughts of his future and a 6 figure + salary came to mind.

Since coming to Dallas he has positioned himself to make at least the practice squad.  He has transformed from a pass catching tight end to a versatile football player.  Willing to take on any job if it means making the team.  Hats off to you Scott despite your rocky beginning.

Dallas Cowboys Draft Dez Bryant, Sean Lee in Value Draft

Posted by Bryan Martin On April - 26 - 2010 View Comments

Hey guys, It’s good to back in the swing of things after experiencing quite a lull in the offseason.  As most of you know the Cowboys made quite an array of value picks in this past weekends draft.  Many of you aren’t thrilled or are just unaware of where the picks came from so I thought we’d visit each pick, grade it, and let you guys get a better feel of your new Cowboys.

Dez Bryant, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State: Dez Bryant is a Top 10 talent who fell down to the Cowboys due to over hyped off the field issues.  Make no mistake about it, Bryant is a superstar in the making and will give the Cowboys the most productive receiving corps in the NFL.

Career Stats: 147 receptions, 2425 yards 29 touchdowns

Grade: A+

Sean Lee, Inside Linebacker, Penn State: Sean Lee is yet another first round talent that dropped due to an injury the season before.  Lee is instinctive; he dissects plays marvelously and is comparable to Keith Brooking.  Lee gives extreme value to a position that would have soon become a need.  Expect great things about of Lee for years to come, he’s your franchise ILB.

Career Stats: 324 Tackles, 3 FF, 3 INTs

Grade: A-

Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Free Safety, Indiana (PA): This is probably the pick you’re most curious about.  I’m a Pennsylvania native, so obviously this pick means a lot to me.  Akwasi is a versatile, speedy, raw athlete that will be able to evolve into a play making free safety.  It will take a year or two but Akwasi has all the potential and intangibles to be Pro Bowl safety.  Especially known for  his coverage ability.

Grade: A-

Sam Young, Offensive Tackle, Notre Dame: Another intriguing prospect, great arm length and skill set, but will more then likely be a career back up with starting potential.  I don’t foresee him being the future at any position but I do see him being a capable pack up who can start effectively in case of an injury.

Grade: B

Sean Lissemore, Defensive Tackle, William and Mary: Comparable to Jay Ratliff according to Dallas Cowboys stats; He obviously isn’t going to start.  However, I do believe he will be an upgrade in the position and will allow for a more versatile and explosive defensive line in 4 down lineman sets.

Career Stats: 174 tackles 13.5 sacks

Grade: C+

Undrafted Rookies to Watch:

Will Barker, OT, Virginia

Phil Costa, G, Maryland

Chris Gronkowski, FB, Arizona

Matt Nichols, QB, Eastern Washington

Lonyae Miller, RB, Fresno State

Chet Teofilo, G, California

Flozell Adams and Ken Hamlin Released

Posted by Bryan Martin On April - 2 - 2010 View Comments

In a pretty shocking move, the Dallas Cowboys released starting Safety Ken Hamlin and Left Tackle Flozell Adams.  This move isn’t the shock as we’ve all expected it to take place, the shock lies in the timing.  I foresaw the move taking place but I expected the draft to go by first.  It looks like the Cowboys know exactly what they want and they’re ready to keep this young talented team, exactly that, a YOUNG talented team.

There are drawbacks though, you will not find immediate success in the successors of the position.  Doug Free who is projected to start in Flo’s place will undoubtedly let Tony Romo get slammed quite a bit, while Mike Hamlin or whoever mixes in, will let big plays happen.

In foresight I see this being a beneficial move for the future.  However, if your expecting results this season, you’re going to be disappointed.  I am waiting comments from Jerry, Wade, and the coaching staff, as well as other players and updated news.  As we figure stuff out, we’ll let you know!

The combine has concluded and we can all agree that it doesn’t really hurt a players stock, it’s more of a helper.  I have spent some time evaluating the Cowboys and the prospects and have completely altered my stance on this NFL draft since my last mock-up.

I’d like to give you guys my revised picks for the first 3 rounds and see what you think, so here we go:

Round 1: Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland

Campbell is an absolute freak:  6-3, 315 lbs of pure muscle.  His skills are a little raw but his potential is limitless.  If the Cowboys can nab him and get him a good mentor on the offensive line to work on his mechanics and game knowledge, Campbell will become a perennial Pro-Bowler.

Round 2: Myron Rolle, S, FSU

Myron Rolle is a special case.  Something that appeals to me is his character.  Rolle isn’t the cocky athlete who boasts in his ability.  Instead, he is a brilliant man who has a bright future outside of football.  Well, despite his incredible potential as a man in this world, he decided to play football first.  That decision will land him a role as a franchise caliber player in the Blue and Silver for years.  His game isn’t quite at the level of a Thomas or Berry, but his intellect, game knowledge, and rare athletic ability make him an attractive player for any team.

Round 3: Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida

Spikes has been highly regarded all season throughout collegiate football as a middle linebacker.  Unfortunately, his workout in Indianapolis was less than impressive.  Like I said before though, I don’t really care.  I’ve seen this kid play and he is ruthless.  His size and play recognition make him a great run stopping threat and could really benefit from sitting behind Brooking for a year.  If Spikes is off the board expect Sean Lee to be taken instead.

Texas WR Jordan Shipley: 2010 Draft Prospect Profile

Posted by Bryan Martin On February - 26 - 2010 View Comments

The combine has begun and so will we here at DCN.   With draft prospects becoming more and more known the Cowboys have shown great interest in a few players.  However, you guys have shown interest in a few players too.  A player that you guys have talked about is WR Jordan Shipley from Texas and today he is the target of our Prospect Profile.

Jordan Shipley (6-0, 195lbs)

Wr/Texas

Shipley is a speedy experienced receiver.  His time in the game has allowed him to study the game and understand complex defensive formations and assignments.

Why the Take Him: Shipley is a Texas player so naturally people would love to see him in the Blue and Silver.  Beyond that Shipley is an explosive player with great speed and ability.  He could add depth to a mediocre receiving unit as well as fill in as a slot receiver.  He is an attractive pick if he’s available in the third round.

Why they don’t: You know, there is just not that many weaknesses in this kid.  I believe he’s a talented player being easily forgotten in a draft with some great receivers.

Final Word: Shipley is a versatile player who could make plays in different position.  He is also known for making big plays when they needed them.  However, you’re looking at placing him next to Ogletree and I’m not sure you want to stop the development of Ogletree quite yet.

2010 Draft Prospect Profile: USC Safety Taylor Mays

Posted by Bryan Martin On February - 22 - 2010 View Comments

As I’ve stated many times, my projected first round pick for the Cowboys is Idaho guard Mike Iupati, however, that’s merely an opinion.  Someone once said to me “Opinions are like buttholes, everyone’s got one and most of them stink.”  So another popular opinion among experts has the Dallas Cowboys taking Safety Taylor Mays of USC.  So I thought we’d start our series of Player Profiles here and analyze this pick.

Taylor Mays (6-3, 220, Safety-USC)

Why they take him: Mays is an extremely rangy safety.  He clocks a 4.45 40-yard dash and is an incredible physical specimen.  His play has showcased some terrific abilities from jumping to movement.  He has proven to be durable and have terrific work ethic while always keeping the team first which would match the new Cowboys locker room style to a tee.  His ability to play the run is also attractive.

Why they don’t: Mays is your typical Roy Williams cliché.  Despite his upside he has been inconsistent making questionable decisions and plays.  Often caught going for the big hit instead of the safe tackle, Mays can easily become a liability at the next level.  Many experts believe that he will have an issue playing man coverage with receivers due to his technique.

Final Word: Mays is a tremendous talent and may be hard to pass up.  However, he is just not what this team needs.  This team needs a safety that won’t be a liability in pass coverage and will be reliable when backs or receivers threaten that last line of defense.  Mays has many strengths but his weaknesses ruin Cowboys compatibility. If they do take him, I’d be surprised if the relationship lasted longer than his rookie contract.

Hey Cowboys Nation, I’m here to treat you with my first 2010 mock draft.  I’ve done a decent amount of research and watching and have established, what I believe is a solid draft for the Dallas Cowboys.  Of course, this can all change as we watch the combine and pro days in the weeks ahead.

Over the next few weeks I will be looking at each of these choices in depth, and will also provide news, combine, and prospect updates in the days leading to the draft.  So enjoy this, share your insight, and stay tuned as Dallas Cowboys Nation begins to lead you through this offseason.

G/T Mike Iupati
Idaho

Why They Take Him: Mike Iupati has been a favorite of the Cowboys Scouts.  Impressive at the senior bowl, Iupati has all the intangibles that the Cowboys love on the line.  He is powerful, fast, and knowledgeable.  If Iupati is available, which I believe he will be, He will prove over time to be a steal at 27.

How He Fits: Iupati would make an immediate impact on this team.  With Flo on his way out and Kosier finishing up his contact we are in need of offensive lineman.

Ok Cowboy’s fans and NFL fans alike.  Lets get this show going.  The NBA allstar game has cleared out of Cowboys Stadium, Valentines Day is over, and the franchise deadline looms.  All this means one thing… Our small vacation is over and coverage is back full swing.

Lets get started.  The Cowboys have a decision to make in the upcoming days.  Do we Franchise Miles Austin?  While the argument could be compelling, do you really want to give your most productive receiver and young star an opportunity to look elsewhere?

Miles Austin didn’t really do much this season just posted a mere 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns.  Not really too exciting when thinking about how many cowboys receivers have posted better stats.  Wait you mean he’s had one of the top seasons out of all the cowboys receivers ever?  He posted more touchdowns this season then Irvin ever did?

Yup…

Miles Austin is more then a franchise tag, he is a long term franchise receiver.  Someone for Romo to grow with and make waves with.  I expect Jerry to ink Miles long term, but we’ll keep you updated.

Draft Watch

As many of you know I am a huge fan of Mike Iupati.  I have projected this Dallas Cowboys to pick Iupati at the 27th pick and apparently I am not alone.  MyNFLdraft a draft specialized NFL website has also projected Iupati to fall into the Cowboys laps.  After a brilliant display at the Senior Bowl Iupati would be exactly what the Cowboys are looking for in an offensive lineman.  Keep an eye on him during the Combine in the next couple weeks.

As I’ve said before, the break here for us DCN bloggers is over and it’s time to attack this offseason full force, so stay tuned for player biographies, analysis, and news breaks.

Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Favorites? Makes Sense To Me

Posted by Bryan Martin On February - 9 - 2010 View Comments

It’s a little sobering you know?  Seeing that team your team beat win the world championship.

Cowboys fans everywhere are reeling and there is nothing we can do about it.  A new season is upon us and it starts with an offseason that will be fairly quiet around Dallas Cowboys Nation.  There is one question, though, that needs answering and many people want it to be answered soon.

Will the Cowboys be playing at home in the 2011 Super Bowl?

I think the answer is maybe.

They have the talent, athleticism, and coaching.  They have the leadership and skill.  They do not have a coosh schedule, so if they do make it, you certainly better believe they deserved it.

There are many questions but I can promise you this—Tony Romo will be prepared for next season. His career year in ’09 proves that to all the critics.  Is he elite? Probably not yet, but he has the potential to be.

DeMarcus Ware will help make sure this defense is at its best next year.  Lastly, I promise that Jerry Jones will make sure this is a team capable of winning a championship.

That’s right, I said it. Jerry Jones is the key to this whole thing.

If he keeps the locker room cohesiveness that he doesn’t even believe in, if he trusts the leaders he paid, and the coaches he appointed, Dallas will be playing in next years championship game.

With Donovan McNabb in limbo, the Saints loosing a lot of players, Kurt Warner and Brett Favre gone, and Green Bay remaining inconsistent, the possibilities are endless with this talented Dallas Team.

Vegas odds are 15-2 for—you think they’ll make it? I do.

As we reported earlier this week, Deon Anderson was arrested do to traffic warrants.  It seems as though things have gotten a little deeper since Deon was charged with misdemeanor deadly conduct after allegedly pulling a gun on a valet staff member outside of an Addison, TX restaurant.

Anderson has been quoted as being unsure of his job security and you have to believe his career is in jeopardy.

The Cowboys are a year removed from a successful locker room spring-cleaning and this is the very thing that Jerry Jones said he was trying to get rid of.  With Anderson facing a year in jail, you have to believe his time to go is now.

Matt Stover’s Childhood Dream Could Come True

Matt Stover is a 20-year-veteran NFL kicker.  After growing up in Dallas, none of his pro games have been played as a Cowboy.  Despite Stover’s age, he is still a pretty reliable kicker, finishing the season 9 of 11 with a long of 43 and a 93 percent career accuracy rating.

One thing that is starting to rust on Stover is his kickoffs, which has limited his looks from other teams.  He was signed to Indianapolis after an injury to Adam Vinatieri and has proved he still has some gas left in the tank.

Being a Dallas native, his long held dream has been to play for the Dallas Cowboys, something he’s joked about still wanting with reporters from Miami this week.

Stover will be a free agent this year. Could it be time for some veteran assistance on field goals next year?

Super Bowl Memories

In a game where Tony Dorsett and Roger Staubach both suffered injuries, the Doomsday Defense was able to prevail against the Orange Crush Denver Bronco’s.  The Cowboys forced four fumbles that day and Morton threw 4 interceptions as the Dallas Cowboys rolled through this Super Bowl for it’s second world championship.

Final Score:

Dallas 27 Denver 10

Deon Anderson Arrested: Cutting Nick Folk Was Justified

Posted by Bryan Martin On February - 3 - 2010 View Comments

Cowboys starting fullback Deon Anderson was arrested for traffic warrants when police were called to a local restaurant for a dispute between the player and staff.  Typically this wouldn’t make news except for the fact that two weapons were confiscated from Anderson’s car.

Anderson posted bail from the Irving, TX jail the next morning.  Though no charges were directly filed against the Cowboys player, it’s worth keeping an eye on.  The Cowboys expressed knowledge of the incident and we will follow any subsequent action from the organization.

An Old Folk Tale

Sometimes you’ll hear an organization criticized for its moves throughout the season.  The same is true for Cowboys ex-kicker Nick Folk.  It seems as though everyone says the Cowboys acted too fast on the release of Folk.   I strongly disagree.  This is a job and if you are not performing your job you shouldn’t have it.  Sorry if that’s harsh but it’s true, the dude’s getting paid millions to kick a ball weekly.

Am I being to harsh? Maybe, because I can’t kick field goals.  I do know however that there are people in this country being shot at daily so that the NFL can still exist and saving lives and they make what? $40-70,000 dollars? Get real.

Super Bowl Memories

In Super Bowl 28 the Dallas Cowboys played a Buffalo Bills team that seemed ready to finally win a Super Bowl.  Unfortunately, one man stood in their way—Emmitt Smith.  The Cowboys were down 13-6 when Leon Lett forced a fumble and Safety James Washington scooped it up for a defensive touchdown.

This sparked the Cowboys offense and Emmitt led the way on a perfect drive where he produced 61 yards on 7 touches and a touchdown to cap it off.  Smith finished with 30 rushes for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns, earning himself the game MVP award.

The Dallas Cowboys have few needs or holes to fill up this offseason.  The call seems to be that we need to draft a safety first and you will see me agree with that assessment on most accounts.

However, there is a name out in this draft that, if available, we have to jump for.  I have been following the Senior Bowl fervently and have witnessed one particular offensive lineman consistently put defensive lineman on their back or in deadlock.

This players name is Mike Iupati, an offensive guard from Idaho.

At senior bowl practice this year the 6 foot 5, 325 pound guard pancaked Louisiana Tech’s D’Anthony Smith during a pass rush drill.  That changed everything for Iupati who instantly became someone to keep an eye on.

Originally from Samoa, Iupati is a man with great character and extreme talent who many experts believe can also play tackle.  He is fast, strong, and smart.  A great combination for a man trying to make his mark in one of the most important positions in football.

So what will he be for Dallas?

We have an aging line and need to find a replacement for Adams and Koiser, Iupati has the perfect build and skill set to come in and be an impact right away for the Dallas Cowboys.

A lot of people are calling for Taylor Mays from USC to be called at the 27th pick of the NFL draft but Iupati would be the smarter call.  Mays was shaky this week when asked to perform at a higher level and many project Iupati to be a late first-early second pick.  Jerry’s gotta pull the trigger.

Other Names to keep an eye on:

Terrell Skinner, Maryland, FS: A balanced safety who is projected anywhere between the 3-5 rounds.  With Sensabaugh adding some security at safety I think Skinner could really transform into a good rangy safety.  At the Senior Bowl this past weekend Skinner played well making his presence felt on the field.

Morgan Burnett, Georgia Tech, Safety: A junior who earned his first start at Tech as a freshman.  A leader with great coverage skills who can also tackle with good form.  He has the ability to make plays leading the Tech defense with 7 interceptions and 15 passes defended.  Projected in the second round.

Sean Lee, Penn State, ILB: Lee is a dominating linebacker who makes plays consistently.  Though slowed with a leg injury, if you could get him in the 3rd round you gotta take the gamble that the injury isn’t going to affect him.  Penn State is known as “linebacker U” and experts have this guy as the best to come out in the last 5 years.

Bryant Anderson, Central Michigan, WR: With Miles Austin emerging as our fast playmaking receiver, Anderson could compliment him wonderfully.  A tall possession receiver who seems to make all the catches and wins almost every jump ball.  Needs to work on burst and YAC but lots or potential for this 4th round pick.

Malcolm Sheppard, Arkansas, DT: This is an explosive defensive tackle who can fill gaps.  Quick off the snap is quick to penetrate as well with the acceleration and awareness to change direction and stop plays.  Wonderful play recognition plus Jerry loves his razorbacks.

Miles Austin or Gerald Sensabaugh? Offseason Questions Loom

Posted by Bryan Martin On January - 28 - 2010 View Comments

Around the league you’ll hear a lot of talk about whose going to do what during the offseason.  One of the biggest buzz’s I’ve heard is the possibility of slapping a franchise tag on wide receiver Miles Austin.  In a way this could be a good idea, but ultimately I think this is a wrong move.

There are quite a few free agents for the Cowboys this year, though most restricted I think the franchise tag could be used more wisely elsewhere.

Jason Hatcher, Stephen Bowen, Marcus Spears, and Gerald Sensabaugh all highlight names that the organization needs to consider retraining.  Hatcher and Bowen have allowed for a good defensive line rotation while Sensabaugh solidified a safety position that has been lacking since Roy Williams rookie year.

So what to do?

I think the answer is as simple as you might be thinking.  Hatcher and Bowen are low bucks players who can work things out within the organization on their own.  Spears, to me, can be replaced though it would stink to see him go.  Sensabaugh still leaves a possible upgrade situation at safety through the draft but you have to like what he’s done.

Final Answer… Tender Spears or make a small offer to him, Sign Bowen or Hatcher to deal (if not both), Franchise Sensabaugh, and ink Austin long term.  This would give the best value while impacting the teams future play.

What do you guys think would be a good way to handle this offseason?

With the Offseason Started In Dallas, Moves Can Be Made

Posted by Bryan Martin On January - 20 - 2010 View Comments

We’re fans right?  And you know what fans love to do? Speculate.  That’s right, we love to believe we know everything and come up with moves we expect to be made before the beginning of the season.

You know what’s best? We believe those moves are actually going to happen and if they don’t then the team’s destined to fail.

See we’re all GM’s, myself included.

I often ask myself why no team calls me inquiring about my interest in a front office or coaching position.  Sure my resume is pretty blank but I mean heck, I’ve got a 717 IQ in Madden, I win tons of championships, and I write for a Cowboys site.

I mean Hello! Jerry, I’m right here!  Please inquire to hire!

Anyway, since my phone’s not ringing I thought that I’d give you my speculations for the upcoming season.

Sign Miles Austin long term: A no brainer right?  I mean this is my least ballsiest move.  This needs to get done and get done like yesterday.  Miles Austin needs to be locked up for at least 5 years to help Tony Romo get a ring.

Bottom line: No Miles, no ring.

Get rid of Bennett and Barber: Yea I’m getting real right here.  Bennett talks too much trash and his production is minimal.  He is the perfect equation for a team distraction. Plus, have you guys seen the way John Phillips plays ball? Get Real! In Barber’s case, he is still a great back.  However, we’ve got three great backs and Barber’s upside still makes him someone we can package into a deal before he starts wearing down.

The 2009-2010 season is behind us now.  That being said we have a lot to reflect on.  Wins and losses have welcomed us with open arms and now we are already in gear to prepare for our next season.  (Let it be known Dallas Cowboys Nation will not take a break on any day out of this offseason)

So as we continue to reflect we question why we aren’t playing anymore.  We blame and point fingers but gosh, there were a lot of positives this year.  So I thought I’d slip an anti depressant into your day to help you from jabbing a pencil through your eye at work tomorrow.

Here are the things to look forward to in 2010:

Eagles Vs Cowboys: Has this rivalry emerged as the Cowboys most intense and hated or what?  Not to mention what DeSean Jackson and the Playoffs have done to it.  This is going to be flat out exciting next year as these two powerhouses collide twice next year again.

Tony Romo and Miles Austin: Talk about the emergence of two undrafted stars.  Given that Romo is in his 7th season it’s really his fourth as a starter.  These two have really developed chemistry this year and they are going to continue to be explosive.  Tony Romo had his best season to date and Miles Austin is only going to help that get better.

Felix Jones: I firmly believe that Felix is the number one running back on this team.  Every time he touches the ball I feel like he’s going to either get a first down or a touchdown.  He is a flat out game changer and I’m excited to witness his impact next year.

Doomsday Defense: This season has been a coming out party for some of our defenders.  DeMarcus Ware and Jay Ratliff proved that they belong with the elite.  Igor Olshansky, Mike Jenkins, and Anthony Spencer proved that they are going to be among the elite.  The balance of speed and toughness in this defense is perfect and it’s a recipe for disaster.

As you can see there is a lot to look forward too in this Dallas Cowboys team and it should be exciting to watch it unfold!

Stay tuned for our off-season coverage and analysis of league news.

Dallas Cowboys Lose to Minnesota Vikings: Time To Move On

Posted by Bryan Martin On January - 17 - 2010 View Comments

It’s a hard thing to deal with—losing.  It’s hard because you believe your team has taken a step back. Things were clicking and now you’re unsure if it was even worth getting excited about.

I’ve been a fan of the Cowboys for 10 years. I have studied Cowboys history a great deal and consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable.  However, studying doesn’t produce emotion.

This was my first season in which the Cowboys won a playoff game.  It was the first season I watched a team play with intensity and heart.

Now I know losing to the Minnesota Vikings the way we did isn’t sitting well with most of you.  The fact that Tony Romo fumbled and threw the ball away a good bit has some of you wondering if he’s the real answer at quarterback.  Another question among you may be something about the safety’s and if that situation will ever solve itself.

I know that you’re agreeing with this and you know what parts coming up, but please hear me out.

Yes, this is a step back, but we’ve taken three steps forward.  This team has finally come into its own—it’s finally learned that a team is a family and when you win and lose, you do it together.

It’s much too early to start over, it’s too soon to call Romo a bust (who’s played brilliantly this season by the way), it’s too soon to say that Wade should be gone, and it’s certainly to soon to say this defense isn’t a unit that can win championships.

This is your Dallas Cowboys team for the next three or four years.

The draft will bring us some new faces and so will free agency, and some players will go (Marcus Spears).  You can bet some players will be packaged in a deal (We’ve got our eyes on Martellus Bennett and Marion Barber) but ultimately this is the unit that will bring wins and losses.

So as I sit here and rewind, think to the future, and put together the formula for a championship, I can’t help but think we’ve got most of the pieces.

Add a spectacular safety here, a future blue-collar middle linebacker, and some depth in the trenches and you’ve got a team that is built to win.

If you’re like me then you’re sitting down depressed and looking for any reassurance or optimism about the coming season.  Hear me now, believe that these Cowboys are for real and they are not done.  The schedule is tough next year—but it’s not un-winnable.

So as we take a step back—after a few steps forward—lets see where Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips lead us next before assuming it’s the end.

Charles Woodson Named Defensive POY: Anquan Boldin Will Play

Posted by Bryan Martin On January - 13 - 2010 View Comments

Well with all this playoff talk, we forget that there is other news to keep up with.  The Dallas Cowboys have made a move for the future by signing linebacker Leon Williams.  According to a blog by Nick Eatman, the Dallas Cowboys signed the Cleveland linebacker today to a “futures” contract.

In 12 career starts Leon Williams has recorded 90 tackles and 4 sacks.

Woodson Defensive Player of the Year

Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson edged out Darrelle Revis for this years Defensive Player of the Year.  Woodson has been dynamic and has truly exemplified the title “shut down corner.”  At no point in the season did anyone worry about Woodson despite his matchup.  This season he had 9 interceptions, 3 touchdowns, 27 passes defended, 2 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles.

Some people could have a tremendous argument for Revis, but at the end of the day Woodson was a more rangy cornerback who won games for his team.  Period.

Injury Update: Boldin optimistic

The Arizona Cardinals are going into the most difficult game of their season.  Going into New Orleans the Cardinals will need to have all their weapons.  Luckily wide receiver Anquan Boldin is saying he feels much better and likes his chances to play in this weeks Divisional Playoffs.

Boldin is a 3 time Pro Bowler who has been a consistent luxury to quarterback Kurt Warner.  If he’s in the line up you can’t rule out the Arizona Cardinals to pull out an upset of the No. 1 seeded Saints.

Tashard Choice Good to Go: Kurt Warner to Retire

Posted by Bryan Martin On January - 11 - 2010 View Comments

Saturday Night Cowboys Nation was in for a scare.  Tashard Choice went down in the fourth quarter seemingly with a head injury.  Choice, who previously suffered a concussion, was kept out of the game.

“I just took a lick, I’m good to go” Choice said after the game.  I seems as though it was just a slight injury, but it’s worth keeping an eye on.  Choice will be a big part in getting to the Super Bowl.

In other news, Marion Barber wasn’t feeling right during the game and asked to keep himself rested.  All this according to Wade Phillips during a press conference.

Almost done

The Arizona Cardinals just defeated the Green Bay Packers in a shoot out that ended on a crazy defensive play in overtime.  However, reports indicate that whenever the Cardinals do lose again it’ll be the last game Kurt Warner plays.

Kurt Warner has been a success and is Hall of Fame bound.  Successful stints in St. Louis and a trip to the Super Bowl with Arizona has helped Warner amass an impressive resume.  Whatever he decides, I will always recognize him as one of the best.

Play On!

Next weeks playoff matches are as follows:

Saturday January 16, 2010:

Arizona at New Orleans (4:30 ET)

Baltimore at Indianapolis (8:15 ET)

Sunday January 17, 2010:

Dallas at Minnesota (1:00 ET)

NY Jets at San Diego (4:40 ET)

Philadelphia Eagles Help Dallas Cowboys Win in Playoffs

Posted by Bryan Martin On January - 10 - 2010 View Comments

Now I want you all to understand before further reading what I have to say.  I believe that this Dallas Cowboys team is the best we’ve seen in years.  From top to bottom they are hands down one of the best teams in the league.  I believe that Tony Romo and Wade Phillips have finally got over the hump and this team is ready to be a dominating team for years to come.

Last night the Cowboys played brilliantly on every level.  Their heart, talent, and intensity were unmatched by a good Philadelphia Eagles team.  I do believe though, that the Eagles beat themselves before the game even started.  There was a significant series of events that pissed off the Cowboys and I plan to recap them today.  So without further ado, here is how the Eagles beat themselves:

Spitting on the Star— Eagles blogger Dave Spadaro felt that he needed to video tape a voyage onto the field and spit on the Dallas Cowboys Star.  An emblem that has seen it’s share of abuse but is one of the most respected in the league.  The minute he did that he incited a riot.  That idiot did more damage than he expected, firing up a Dallas Cowboys Team that has Super potential.

DeSean Twitters— DeSean Jackson has been virtually shut down by emerging cornerback Mike Jenkins.  This week DeSean Jackson thought it would be appropriate to talk trash on the team that had previously shut him down 2 times already.  Jackson said that Mike Jenkins had never shut him down and the Eagles were going to Sting the ‘Boys.  Didn’t work! Instead it warned Dallas to sharpen their stingers and they stung.

McNabb Dancing— Walking onto the field last night, McNabb—cocky as ever—felt it appropriate to start dancing and jump at and scare a fan on the other side of the glass.  It was McNabb who started laughing and took it all as a game.  Well McNabb? We have the last laugh.  Game Over.

We’ll be back with a full break down and analysis of this game as well as the matchup with Minnesota next Sunday at noon.
